Finding Common Ground in Conceptualizing, Nurturing, and Assessing Dispositions Thursday, February 7, 9:00 a.m. ? 12:00 p.m.
Description: What do dispositions mean in the context of your teacher preparation program? Join members of AACTE?s Task Force on Teacher Education as a Moral Community (TEAMC) and representatives from various AACTE institutions to engage in dialogue around how dispositions are conceptualized, nurtured, and assessed in teacher preparation programs.
The work of TEAMC raises questions about how teacher educators might build a moral community in teaching. This session will examine how a college, school, or department of education helps to nurture both individuals and the community as a whole. Using institutional cases as concrete examples, participants will consider a set of questions that can guide decision-making in programs around how to foster dispositions. In this interactive session, participants will consider larger issues surrounding the use of dispositions in teacher education and refine work in their own institutional contexts.
Presenters: Mary Diez (TEAMC Chair), Alverno College; Jack Benninga, California State University, Fresno; Erskine Dottin, Florida International University; Sharon Feiman-Nemser, Brandeis University; Peter Murrell, Northeastern University; Hugh Sockett, George Mason University

Preparing Teachers to Serve: A Comprehensive Framework for Understanding How All Kids Learn
Thursday, February 7, 9:00 a.m. ? 4:00 p.m. (with a 1-hour break for lunch on your own)
Description: The primary goal of All Kinds of Minds is to educate people about differences in learning so that children who are struggling in school because of the way their brains are ?wired? are no longer misunderstood. Mel Levin and his colleagues developed these programs based on scientific research and more than 30 years of clinical experience. All Kinds of Minds enables students, their parents, and their teachers to understand why they are having difficulty in school by identifying their learning profiles, essentially ?maps? that pinpoint each child?s strengths and weaknesses in learning. Once this profile is created, All Kinds of Minds provides the language and tools to develop a concrete, practical action plan to help each child succeed.
Participants will examine this groundbreaking framework for two purposes: (a) understanding why children struggle in school, providing a straightforward, practical system for recognizing variations in the way children learn, and (b) considering how teacher education can use the framework in preparing candidates who will serve P-12 learners. Please visit www.allkindsofminds.org for more information on All Kinds of Minds.
Presenter: Mel Levin, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
