JUSTEC 2008 Call for Proposals

Background
The 20th Annual Seminar of the Japan - United States Teacher Education Consortium (JUSTEC) will be held July 30-August 2, 2008 in Kyoto, Japan. Sponsored by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), this year?s conference will be hosted by Bukkyo University. Hotel accommodations will be coordinated by the host university.

Call for Papers
This year?s JUSTEC Seminar continues the tradition of Japanese and U.S. teacher educators convening annually to promote understanding of and collaborative research into education issues of interest in both Japan and the U.S. JUSTEC seminars include interactive presentations by Japanese and American educators, visits to area schools and historic shrines and temples not open to the general public, formal and informal discussions among seminar participants, and other cultural activities.

Participation is open to university administrators and faculty, PK ? 12 educators, and graduate students. Questions and active discussion are encouraged as part of the presentations. The primary language for presentations will be English. Handouts in both English and Japanese will be appreciated.

Topics
1. Teacher Education Controversies in Japan and U.S.A.?Topics may include teacher quality, teacher license renewal system, and countermeasures for parent complaints.

2. Collaborative Research--Topics may include research and projects recently completed, in progress, or proposed between Japan and U.S. educators.

3. Professionalism of Teaching?Topics may include accountability, professional development, merit pay, teacher retention, teacher or student stress, mentoring, use of technology in teaching, and evaluation of educator preparation programs.

4. Diversity in the Classroom?Topics may include multicultural considerations, second language learning, teaching immigrant groups, and gender differences in learning.

Conference Registration
Participants whose proposals are selected will be sent JUSTEC 2008 registration forms by e-mail. Registration fees must be paid to Bukkyo University by credit card according to the e-mailed registration forms. The cost is $400 for each participant.  The registration fee for students and guests is $250.  Fees cover receptions, site visits, and most meals.  It does not include room expenses or travel. Submission Guidelines
Submit proposals in Microsoft Word format, not to exceed 200 words, as an attachment via email. Proposals from the U.S. should be submitted to clark@uwec.edu by March 15, 2008. Proposals from Japan should be submitted to chika@naruto-u.ac.jp by April 15, 2008. The subject of the email should read JUSTEC 2008. The body of the email and the attachment should each include the name and contact information for the primary presenter as well as the names and institutional affiliation of co-presenters.
