MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION

AACTE is involved in a number of projects and activities that have a multicultural component/orientation.  AACTE's Committee on Multicultural Education oversees programs that foster culturally and linguistically responsive education practices, and continues to assist SCDEs in the process of incorporating Multicultural education in all aspects of their programs.  The Association emphasizes a commitment to cultural pluralism (No One Model American, 1972), and provides a national forum for SCDEs in the areas of human rights, social justice, educational quality, and Multicultural and Global education.

Publications and materials are available to assist schools, colleges, and departments of education in developing a culturally and linguistically responsive education curriculum and in recruiting persons of color into teaching.

AACTE Statement on Multicultural Education

Announcements

  • New Book Explores Preparing Teachers for Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Students

BookcoverAACTE announces the release in September of Language, Culture, and Community in Teacher Education, edited by María Brisk from BostonCollege (MA). The volume is based on the premise that all teachers need to be prepared to work effectively with linguistically and culturally diverse students.

This book?s contributors emphasize that such students?immigrants, refugees, language minority populations, African Americans, and deaf students?have both common and unique education needs. Typically, literature on language education has focused on preparing English-as-a-second- language or bilingual teachers, and the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students have been addressed separately.

The book, published for the Association by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates/ Taylor and Francis Group, reflects the work of AACTE?s former Committee on Multicultural Education and other scholars in the areas of linguistics and culture in education. It may be ordered from AACTE Publications by clicking here.

In addition, the book has been featured as a resource for educators at ColorinColorado.org, a bilingual web site for families and educators of English language learners, sponsored by WETA (the flagship public broadcasting station in the nation?s capital) and the American Federation of Teachers. An interview with the Editor has been posted on the Colorin Colorado Website http://www.colorincolorado.org/fromtheheart/18795.

A joint session featuring the book and work with the Colorín Colorado project will be offered at the 2008 AACTE Annual Meeting & Exhibits.
