PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
SCHOOL Banner Elk Elementary School/Lees-McRae College Agreement for Operation
POLICIES
BORROWING AND LENDING
Borrowing and lending are
encouraged between the institutions of the Professional Development School. The
borrowing party must adhere to the rules endorsed by the lending institution. Priority
will always go to the members of the institution where materials and equipment are
housed. Materials and equipment borrowed from an outside institution are "on
call" and must be returned within 24 hours if needed by the lender. FACILITIESBanner Elk Elementary will provide a floating work space for conferences
and meetings for the Professional Development School. Also, a locker/cabinet space will
be provided for storage. Lees-McRae College Education Division
will provide office space, library support, and work space for a Professional
Development Center. This is open to anyone in the Avery County School System.
INTERNSHIPSAn internship will be completed by each Lees-McRae College Elementary
Education student during the semester prior to student teaching.
- The internship will be Monday through
Friday.
- The hours will be 8:00 am until 12:00
noon.
- Scheduling for internships will
provide a comprehensive learning experience for the K-5 pre-professional. The
schedule will include:
- 5 weeks in K-2
- 5 weeks in 3-4
- 5 weeks in 5th
- Lees-McRae Education professors are
responsible for the coordination of the internship, cooperating fully with the
administration and faculty of Banner Elk School.
- Interns will follow the Lees-McRae
College calendar.
METHODS CLASSESMethods classes will be taken by Lees-McRae Elementary Education students
during the semester of the internship.
- Methods classes will begin at 2:30pm.
- Methods Coordinators will be chosen by
the LMC Education Faculty and the Banner Elk School principal.
- Methods classes will be held both on
the LMC campus and on the Banner Elk School campus, with occasional field trips to
other locations.
- Concepts taught in methods classes
will, if possible, be demonstrated in the Banner Elk School classrooms.
- Methods Coordinators will receive
$150.00 as a stipend for his/her contribution.
STUDENT TEACHERSA directed student teaching experience will be completed by each Lees-McRae
College Elementary Education student during the last semester of the program.
- Each student will be assigned to a
cooperating teacher at Banner Elk Elementary School for one semester.
- The hours for the student teacher will
be the same as the working hours of the cooperating teacher.
- The student teacher will follow the
Banner Elk Elementary School Calendar.
- The student teacher will adhere to the
Policies for Directed Teaching as stated in the Teacher Education Handbook.
- Lees-McRae Education professors are
responsible for the coordination of the student teaching experience, cooperating
fully with the administration and faculty of Banner Elk Elementary School.
COOPERATING TEACHERS
A cooperating teacher will be designated to supervise each student teacher.
- Cooperating teachers will be
designated by the Personnel Director of the Avery County Public Schools.
- Cooperating teachers will receive a
$150.00 stipend for his/her contribution.
CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATIONPublic school employees, Lees-McRae Faculty, and students in field
experiences are exposed to a great deal of confidential information. It shall be
discussed with other professionals Only as it is necessary to benefit the individual or
the school system. It shall not be discussed with persons outside the educational
program. Keeping information confidential is a job
requirement of all employees and a professional requirement of any person participating
in the school program. Violation of this requirement will be judged as unsatisfactory
performance of the employee's or the student's responsibilities.
Never disclose information about students
unless disclosure serves a compelling professional purpose or is required by law.

OTHER INSTITUTIONS
The Professional Development School encourages the inclusion of experiences
at institutions that provide additional opportunities for interaction with diverse and
exceptional populations. {This is a policy in progress and will be
redefined over the first few years as the Professional Development School is
implemented}.
DEFINITIONS
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SCHOOL: a collaborative partnership between BANNER ELK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL and
LEES-McRAE COLLEGE to establish a practical public school environment for enhancing
education. Through collaborative pre-service and inservice education, both institutions
and their faculties benefit and are better able to provide an improved learning
environment for K-5 children and professional education students.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SCHOOL: a collaborative partnership between Banner Elk Elementary School and
Lees-McRae College to establish a practical public school environment for enhancing
education. Through collaborative pre-service and inservice education, both institutions
and their faculties benefit and are better able to provide an improved learning
environment for K-5 children and professional education students.
MENTOR: a carefully chosen professional from Banner Elk Elementary School or
Lees-Mcrae College who models good teaching and wise counseling. While it is understood
that all who work in the program are mentors, students are given the option of choosing
personal mentors.
INTERN: a Lees-McRae Education student who is assigned to a professional mentor
from Banner Elk Elementary School and who is to be included in the workings of the daily
classroom activities.
METHODS CLASSES: courses for Lees-McRae Elementary Education students designed to explore
individually, and to integrate the various disciplines necessary for a comprehensive and
holistic curriculum in the elementary school. The courses will present a basic study of
the subject areas of communication skills, mathematics, science, social studies, visual
arts, music, dance, theatre, health and physical education and demonstrate how the
subject areas can be successfully integrated for classroom study.
METHODS COORDINATOR: a professional from Banner Elk Elementary School who coordinates
instruction with professors of Lees-McRae College's methods classes. The methods
coordinator will teach three to five methods classes during a college semester, aid in
planning or methods courses, and serve as a liaison for Lees-McRae with Banner Elk
faculty for the beneficial working of the PDS. One coordinator will be chosen by the
Banner Elk Faculty to serve the K-2 level and a second coordinator will be chosen by the
Banner Elk Faculty to serve the 3-5 level.
STUDENT TEACHER: a Lees-McRae Education student who is assigned to a cooperating teacher
at Banner Elk Elementary School for a directed teaching experience.
COOPERATING TEACHER: a professional from Banner Elk Elementary School who supervises the
directed teaching experience of a Lees McRae student during the student teaching
semester.
