Background
The 21st Annual Seminar of the Japan-United States Teacher Education Consortium (JUSTEC) will be held September 17-20, 2009, in Honolulu, Hawaii. The 2009 JUSTEC conference will be hosted by the University of Hawai'i-Manoa (UH-M) at the East-West Center, 1601 East-West Road, Honolulu, HI.
JUSTEC 2009 program
Topics
- Teacher Education Issues in Japan and the U.S.—Topics may include teacher quality, teacher learning, teacher license renewal system, and pedagogy. Specific topics proposed must be relevant to both nations.
- Collaborative Research—Topics may include research and projects recently completed, in progress, or proposed between Japan and U.S. educators. Specific topics proposed must be relevant to both nations.
- Professionalism of Teaching—Topics may include accountability, professional development, merit pay, teacher retention, teacher or student stress, mentoring, use of technology in teaching, and evaluation of educator preparation programs. Specific topics proposed must be relevant to both nations.
- Diversity in the Classroom—Topics may include multicultural considerations, second language learning, teaching immigrant groups, and gender differences in learning. Specific topics proposed must be relevant to both nations.
Registration Information
The conference registration fee is $400 for presenters and conference participants and $250 for students and guests. This fee covers the costs of conference receptions, site visits, and most meals, but it does not cover room expenses or travel.

by May 15, 2009. The subject line of the email should include the words "JUSTEC 2009" and the name of the primary presenter. The body of the email and the attachment title should both include the name of the primary presenter.
Notification of acceptance/non-acceptance of proposals will be emailed by May 15, 2009 for U.S. participants and June 15, 2009 for Japanese participants. Presenters are required to bring copies of papers and/or handouts for conference participants. The use of Microsoft PowerPoint in presentations is strongly encouraged to support multi-language communication. Papers presented at the conference will be published subsequently in the Proceedings of JUSTEC 2009.

Registrants are responsible for securing their own lodging. Suggested accommodations are:
- East-West Center Housing on the UH-M campus

- The Ocean Resort Hotel-Waikiki (about $90); near the bus line to campus
- The New Otani-Kaimana Hotel on Waikiki Beach (about $150); 5 blocks from the bus line to campus
In selecting other hotels, participants should inquire about proximity to the bus line to campus.
