About MARTP

The Mid-Atlantic Regional Teachers Project (MARTP) is a collaboration formed in 1998 of six Mid-Atlantic states - Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia - whose issues include regional reciprocity encompassing rural and urban challenges, retirement/pipeline projections, subject area needs, alternate route programs, teacher quality, mobility and equitable hiring practices throughout the region.

MARTP proposes to improve teacher quality by working on key issues together as a region. Four of the MARTP states (Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia) piloted the Meritorious New Teacher Candidate (MNTC) designation in 2004, awarding exceptional new teachers with regional recognition and reciprocity among the four states throughout their teaching careers. In 2006, the MNTC Pre-Candidate designation (link) was first offered, which identifies exceptionally well-prepared teacher candidates several months before graduation and sends their certification and contact information to school district recruiters.

MARTP was founded by the Laboratory for Student Success (www.lss.org), the Maryland State Department of Education (www.state.md.us), and the Council for Basic Education. It is now hosted by the American Association for Colleges of Teacher Education. It is funded through grants from the Laboratory of Student Success, the Education Commission of the States, and participating states.

Note: MNTC is the product of MARTP and may not be used without MARTP's permission.
